3...2...1...Action Research Project Planning!

When beginning an action research project, I have learned that the inspiration for whatever topic ones chooses should start with the vision for positive action and change in the education environment.  It is not just a study, but a study that will yield action directly into a school environment.  When it comes to my initial action research plan/idea, I plan on basing my study on the need for better new teacher training and induction into my campus environment.  Not only will my project focus on the content knowledge and skillsets that incoming teachers must utilize, but the support system provided to ensure that new teachers are given the best opportunity to be successful in their first year in the classroom.

My overall research question:  Are new/incoming teachers to the elementary campus receiving adequate training, resources, and support to be successful in their first year of teaching?

This action research project will serve as my first major leadership role with training other staff members on my campus.  It will allow me to investigate the best strategies and approaches that can help new/incoming staff members, as well as provide information on the new teachers’ perspectives throughout their first year experience.  Therefore, the data going to be collected will be mostly qualitative at this point with what I have brainstormed thus far.  It will consist of a monthly meeting and survey to collect data on the new/incoming educators’ needs and progress throughout the year.  Most importantly the monthly evaluations will show if the training being implemented is successful.

In summary, it is crucial to investigate ahead in the action research project in order to ensure validity in the results.  It is not a process to rush, but requires thorough planning to promote the most success for the project.  If the data collection step is misleading from the beginning, the action research project will indeed struggle.  My advice to everyone, identify that area in need of improvement and go for it!  Don't have doubts!  It should be different for each one of us because of the different school environments we all experience.  Conduct your investigation so that you can take action and fix the issue for your campus, your colleagues, and your students that so are lucky to learn from an investigative growth-minded leader.  Good luck everyone!
